How to Arrange Cushions on a Bed: Size & Styling Guide
Need some inspiration for choosing the best cushion size and layout for your bed? Follow our recommended size and layering guide below.
These cushion arrangement recommendations are best suited for double beds (140 cm wide), queen beds (160 cm wide), and king-size beds (180 cm wide).
If you're decorating a smaller bed, consider opting for fewer or smaller cushions. For wider beds, you might want to add more cushions or choose larger sizes.
Single Layer Option
If you prefer a simple, minimal look, then single-layer styling could be ideal for you.
Our favourite single-layer option is to use two 40 x 60 cm cushions and place them in front of your sleeping pillows.
This creates a harmonious look, as the cushions are the perfect length and have a lower height, achieving a balanced and elegant appearance.
Alternatively, opt for two 50 x 50 cm cushions. This versatile option allows you to add a third cushion in front of them if you wish.
Double Layer Option
If you prefer more cushions on your bed or a fuller, cozier look, then the double layer styling option might be ideal for you.
For a beautiful two-layer arrangement, start with two 50 x 50 cm cushions as the first layer.
Add one 40 x 60 cm cushion in front for the second layer. For smaller beds, consider using a 30 x 50 cm cushion instead of the 40 x 60 cm.
Alternatively, choose three 50 x 50 cm cushions: place two at the back and one in front.
Three Layer Option
If you love mixing and matching colors and patterns, then the three-layer styling option could be perfect for you.
For the first layer, choose two 50 x 50 cm cushions.
Choose 30 x 50 cm cushions for both the second and third layers, placing them in front of the square cushions with a slight overlap.
How to Style Bed Cushions
Although design is a creative field with no strict rules, here are some general tips that always work and help create a beautifully styled and harmonious-looking bed:
- Keep one cushion design per styling layer: For example, if you opt for single-level styling, choose both cushions with the same design. If you go for two or three-level styling, alternate the colors of cushions between layers.
- Use a matching throw blanket at the end of the bed: It doesn't necessarily need to match the cushion colors directly but rather repeat some color or pattern that is visible on the cushion. If you find it challenging to find a matching throw blanket, you can never go wrong with a neutral-colored option.
