Cushion Size Guide: Standard Dimensions & What Size Insert to Choose

Standard 50x50 cushions on a neutral sofa by Mood & Pattern.

Choosing the right cushion sizes for your home can make a significant difference—not only in how visually pleasing the room will look but also in how comfortable it feels.

With a wide range of cushion sizes available in stores, choosing the right size can feel overwhelming.

In this guide, we explore the standard cushion sizes available in the UK and Europe (in cm) and help you choose the ideal cushion sizes for your home—whether you are styling a sofa, a bed, or an armchair.

We also provide expert tips on how to choose inserts for a 50cm cover (and other popular sizes) and which filling types offer the most premium feel.

 Here's exactly what we'll cover:

Standard Cushion Sizes in the UK & Europe

To help you find the perfect fit, the following cushion size chart outlines standard cushion sizes in the UK and Europe (in cm), ensuring you choose the ideal cushion size for your sofa, armchair, or bed.

Size (cm) Type Best For (Placement)
45 x 45 cm Small Standard Small to medium sofas, armchairs, and single beds.
50 x 50 cm Standard Medium to large sofas and double beds.
55 x 55 cm Large Standard (particularly popular in the UK) Medium to large sofas and double to king beds.
60 x 60 cm Oversized Large sofas, sectionals, and extra-wide beds.
30 x 50 cm Small Rectangle Ideal for front layering on sofas and beds, and for use on armchairs.
40 x 60 cm Large Rectangle Ideal for front layering on medium to large sofas, and a beautiful size for beds.
40 x 90 cm Oversized Lumbar Single statement cushion for beds or large sofas.

These guidelines are intended as a helpful reference rather than strict rules. For example, extra-large (60 × 60 cm) cushions, while ideal for large sofas, can also create a cosy statement on smaller sofas and beds when an intentionally oversized look is desired.

Should Cushion Inserts Be Bigger Than Covers?

Yes, cushion inserts should generally be larger than the covers. For a luxuriously full look, choose an insert that is 5 cm larger than the cover for square cushions (e.g., a 55 x 55 cm insert for a 50 x 50 cm cover).

This ensures the corners are filled and the cushion looks properly plumped.

For rectangular cushions, it's recommended to use an insert that matches the size of the cover (e.g., a 30 x 50 cm insert for a 30 x 50 cm cover), but ideally as fluffy as possible.

That's because, in commercial stores, there is no good "one-size-up" filling for rectangular covers.

At Mood & Pattern, we use slightly larger inserts for all our cushion covers (both square and rectangular), ensuring a perfect, plush fit.

What is the Most Comfortable Cushion Filling?

We recommend feather inserts for their optimal combination of firmness, weight, body, and long-lasting aesthetic appeal.

If allergies are a concern, there are high-quality synthetic alternatives available that replicate the softness of feather inserts.

Another aspect to consider is the amount of filling material (e.g., feathers) inside the pillow as it dictates both how the pillow looks and feels.

Too much filling can result in an overstuffed and overly firm pillow, while too little may lead to a saggy appearance with inadequate support. We find that pillows with medium firmness offer the most appealing look and feel.

For your convenience, our feather cushion inserts, carefully tested for fit and quality, are available for purchase with all our cushion covers.
